Photography Contracts & Releases to Protect You as a Photographer

Photography Contracts & Releases to Protect You as a Photographer | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it
As with running any business, there is always the risk of legal issues arising. One common occurrence is the loss of images due to card malfunction. A client who has their images lost can spell big legal trouble. If you are not protected such as with a photography contract, clients may have the legal authority to come after your finances and even personal assets.
Kitty Fisher's insight:

Sadly most photographers have to carry a handful of release contracts. If you run a business or if someone tries to sue you, for the fact that a photo of them was published. This could save your name.

How to Spot a Fake Canon Flash... And How I Learned the Hard Way

How to Spot a Fake Canon Flash... And How I Learned the Hard Way | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it
One of the two Canon Speedlite flashes above is fake. Can you tell which one? About a month ago I walked into the Canon Quick Repair Centre in Shanghai. I had a minor problem with a Canon 580 EX II: the high-speed sync refused to work.

I had reasons not to be worried: the flash was less than two months old, I had my warranty card and apart from having been fired a few times the unit was as good as new. So when I walked up to the counter to explain my problem, the worst I could imagine happening was being told I wasn’t very smart followed by a brief demonstration. It wouldn’t be the first time when electronics are involved.
Kitty Fisher's insight:

This very much may be a photographers worse nightmare, acquiring any sort of equipment that is a knock off or a fake? Find out how you can spot the difference.

Adventure Photography Tips: Four Tricks to Supercharge Your Photos (3 of 3)

Adventure Photography Tips: Four Tricks to Supercharge Your Photos (3 of 3) | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

"See Tim Kemple’s previous photography tips >>Use the foreground to draw the viewer’s eye into the picture. I like to call it a third layer–with the subject and background being the other two. The foreground draws in the viewer, the subject captures their attention, and the background tells a story about the place. It’s a pretty reliable formula (if there is such a thing for photography) and can be used with any equipment."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

To be able to capture that National Geographic worthy photo, a series of elements must come into play.

Has Sony redefined mobile photography?

Has Sony redefined mobile photography? | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

"Will the QX10 and QX100 prove to be game changers or gimmicks? Whether you're a camera snob or a smartphone photography enthusiast —  or a little of both — Sony's new QX100 and QX10 are intriguing.

The pair of "digital cameras" are unlike anything we've seen in the DPReview offices before, proving tricky even for us to categorize and anticipate how our readers may react. We've seen manufacturers blend smartphone and compact camera before, with Samsung's Galaxy S4 Zoom probably hitting closest to the target thus far. Smartphone manufactures continue to make valiant efforts to make their products more camera-like as well: Nokia's offering a grip accessory that makes it hard to remember the Lumia 1020 is a phone and Oppo is teasing sensor-equipped plug-in optics with zoom capability. Sony's thinking is truly original: the QX100 and QX10 are transformative accessories designed to become part of your smartphone. Instead of forcing you to choose between camera or smartphone: Sony's encouraging you to have both, with an innovative cross-platform approach."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Sony have been busy this week? Now with this pair the QX100 and QX10, the new motto may become, lens in one hand and smart phone in the other?

Security Researcher Discovers Bug That Would Let Hackers Delete Any Photo Off Facebook | TechCrunch

Security Researcher Discovers Bug That Would Let Hackers Delete Any Photo Off Facebook | TechCrunch | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

"In a nice example of how Facebook's bounty program should work (in contrast with that mess a few weeks ago), a security researcher has unearthed a bug that would let anyone delete just about any photo from Facebook — whether the photo was yours, mine, or Zuckerberg’s — and was paid a solid chunk of cash for the discovery.

According to the terms of Facebook’s white hat program, those who find bugs and follow Facebook’s rules in reporting them are paid a bounty. The minimum bounty for any bug is set at $500, with Facebook paying more based on the bug’s severity. Most payouts I’ve heard of tend to be around $1,500. In his write up of this bug, security researcher Arul Kumar says he was paid $12,500 — roughly 25x the base bounty."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Since basically everyone has a facebook and this happens to involve the photos you post under your name. Reading about this, will help you to be aware and also to protect your own photos.

Pixy: A Low Cost Camera that Recognizes and Follows Objects by Color

Pixy: A Low Cost Camera that Recognizes and Follows Objects by Color | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

Camera technology is always being used/tweaked in one way or another to yield surprising or novel results. In some cases, that means creating a camera that sees like a bug's eye. In others, one that perceives only motion, like a retina.

The most recent camera innovation we've stumbled across falls a bit closer to the second of those. It's called Pixy, and it's a color-detecting camera that might some day soon be the eye with which your friendly neighborhood robot sees and interprets the world.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Talking about robots, this low cost camera does not take your typical picture. Based on color. this camera will track it and send information about where the object is, and with no time wasted.

Wildlife photography tips from Chad Wright | Africa Geographic Magazine Blog

Wildlife photography tips from Chad Wright | Africa Geographic Magazine Blog | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

Firstly, your equipment is good enough despite what you think or have been told!

I’ve seen some amazing images taken with an entry level DSLR and kit lens (regardless of the make). Even the most expensive equipment isn’t going to get you anywhere without passion and patience.

Secondly, look for second hand equipment online or at your local dealers. You’d be surprised how affordable “outdated” professional lens and camera models can be. Some big name lens designs haven’t changed in decades because they are that good. So there is no need to sell the house to buy the latest professional piece of equipment.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Chad Wright explains that to be a Wildlife photographer, you need patience, timing and you do not have to go out and buy the most expensive camera. This self taught lesson, can also be used for whenever you go to the zoo or if you find yourself on a safari trip.

Understanding Depth of Field in Photography

Understanding Depth of Field in Photography | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

Depth of field refers to the range of distance that appears acceptably sharp. It varies depending on camera type, aperture and focusing distance, although print size and viewing distance can also influence our perception of depth of field. This tutorial is designed to give a better intuitive and technical understanding for photography, and provides a depth of field calculator to show how it varies with your camera settings.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Understanding depth of field is in Photography 101, but this tutorial brushes up on controlling just exactly, what you want in your photograph to be sharp and the background to be in soft focus.

Above all else, photography is an art form meant to be enjoyed. Use photography to create memories that last a lifetime, reminding you of places you’ve been and people you’ve known. Always have fun taking pictures, and remain enthusiastic to learn new skills."

9 Photography Mistakes to Avoid

9 Photography Mistakes to Avoid | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

Sometimes as photographers, we make mistakes without even realizing it. Here is a list of 9 photography mistakes that are easy to make but just as easy to fix!

As a photographer, mistakes are a part of life. They help us grow and become better photographers. For example: how many of us have been outside taking photographs and then walked inside, gotten distracted, and forgotten to adjust our settings to the new lighting? Adjusting to changes like this become more automatic with time, but we all make the mistake dozens of times before learning. It teaches us to be aware of our camera all the time when shooting; however, there are some mistakes that take even more time to learn.  Lessons that do not have an automatic reminder like we see when we look at the photo on the back of our cameras."

Kitty Fisher's insight:

When it comes to photography, there are the accidents and then there are the mistakes. Something we keep forgetting to do, over and over again.

When a parent tries to imagine the world that their child lives in. I think David Niles came pretty close to making a replica of that world, with his photography. Catpuring his young son out and about, gives us all the idea that we should capture our own ideas and memories.

The Magic of Natural Light: Twilight

The Magic of Natural Light: Twilight | Mobile Photography | Scoop.it

Twilight, the transition between night and day, is an edge. While the low light levels can be technically challenging, the reward in terms of quality of light are well worth it. I think of it as the ‘magic hour’. You may also see it referred to as the blue hour, a reference to the colour of the ambient light as night falls.

The duration depends on your distance from the equator. In the tropics night falls very fast and twilight is short. Go far enough north (or south) in the summer and it can last for over an hour.

Kitty Fisher's insight:

Forget the artifical light, take on the natural wonders that the daylight has to offer. From purple and red to the twilight hour that enchants us with blues and greens. Take a journey through the magic of natural light.
