'How do they do it?' is the question that springs to mind. Here are five tips for producing your own stunning Instagram photos - granted, you'll never see such a refreshing improvement to your feed. Use natural light as much as possible. Remember how shaky and grainy your photos get when you use your phone camera to take food shots in a dimly lit restaurant? Beautiful, clear and sharp photos are easily achieved when natural light is present. Windows are a great source of light that is not too harsh. When photographing objects or food, try positioning them near a window (e.g. in a restaurant, ask for a table beside the window). If you're photographing a landscape like cherry blossom trees, don't position the sun directly in your photo. Process your photography before uploading it to Instagram. Ironically, the majority of good photos on Instagram are processed with a third party application (or even a few) before being uploaded. Chances are the shot of a plate of pancakes looking inhumanely amazing on your Instagram feed has previously been put through three photography apps, all with different filters and functions. Personally, as a professional photographer taking iPhone shots, I always run my photos through either Snapseed ($4.99 in the app store or free on Android phones) or Camera+ first before adding filters in VSCOcam or Afterglow. Instagram filters may be retro and convenient, but they simply lack the amount of customization that other apps offer in terms of improving your photo. Some really excellent apps that are widely used both by amateurs and professionals alike include: - VSCOcam (free) offers in-app purchases for filters of your choice. I recommend the M and F series. - Afterglow ($0.99) which was developed by photographer Simon Filip has stunning vintage filters, light leaks, and dust overlays.
Kitty Fisher's insight:
