The British Library

The British Library | Visual Design and Presentation in Education | Scoop.it

The British Library has recently released over a million images  onto Flickr Commons for anyone to use, remix and repurpose. These images are taken from books dating back to the 17th, 18th, and 19th century. The images were initially owned and digitized by Microsoft and then later on were given to the British Library to be released into the public domain.

The images cover a wide range of themes and  topics and are presented in different forms including: maps, geological diagrams, landscapes, beautiful illustrations, wall paintings, illuminated and decorative letters, comical satire, and many more. The images have been tagged to " aid browsing and to provide new views on the works themselves. They are tagged by publication year (eg 1764, 1864, 1884), by book (eg 003927270, 000149253), by author (eg Charles Dickens) and by other means. "
