| Ciencia | La Ciencia de la Mula Francis | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

RUEPEP's curator insight, October 7, 2013 4:56 AM

This winter, when Mary Liu sits down to take the final exam in an online course on epidemiology and biostatistics, she’ll do so from the comfort of her own home. She’ll have 24 hours to complete the test, which accounts for 60% of the final grade in the online course, but no one will be peering over her shoulder to make sure she completes the exam on her own without the aid of any of her 50,000 classmates or Wikipedia.

Book review - Quality assurance and accreditation in distance education and e-learning

Book review - Quality assurance and accreditation in distance education and e-learning | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Book review by Shattuck  - Quality assurance and accreditation in distance education and e-learning: Models, policies and research.

Review published in: The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning

The book that Jung and Latchem pulled together provides much-needed discussion on just what quality assurance in distance education is. It also provides conceptual organizational models and practical strategies for continually working towards quality improvement and for transparently tracking and documenting outcomes. Most importantly, this book finally brings quality assurance from being a lofty ideal into the realm of practical discussion.

QUODL - Quality of Online & Distance Education: The rules of e-Learning: Don’t keep your learners in the dark | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Alfredo Corell's insight:

There is a very great temptation to keeping things away from the learner, ‘until they are ready for it’.  As online teachers it is our job to break the learning up into units that the learner can address in their own time and so we naturally analyse the learning in terms of its difficulty, hoping to lead the learner along the path of increasing knowledge.

One potentially positive result of the current fascination with online education is that universities and colleges may be forced to define and defend quality education. This analysis of what we value should help us to present to the public the importance of higher education in a high-tech world.

New Algorithm Assesses the Quality of Wikipedia Articles

New Algorithm Assesses the Quality of Wikipedia Articles | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
An algorithm that assesses the quality of Wikipedia articles could reassure visitors and help focus editors on entries that need improving.
Alfredo Corell's insight:

Today, we get an answer thanks to the work of Xiangju Qin and Pádraig Cunningham at University College Dublin in Ireland. These guys have developed an algorithm that assesses the quality of Wikipedia pages based on the authoritativeness of the editors involved and the longevity of the edits they have made.

“The hypothesis is that pages with significant contributions from authoritative contributors are likely to be high-quality pages,” they say. Given this information, visitors to Wikipedia should be able to judge the quality of any article much more accurately.

American Council on Education (ACE) announced a wide-ranging research and evaluation effort that will examine the academic potential of massive open online courses (MOOCs).

Working with institutional leaders, organizations like Coursera and the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA), and supported by generous funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ACE will leverage its position as the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions to identify and answer questions about the disruptive potential of this new and innovative approach to higher education.
