Canon 1D X Review

I am a landscape photographer at heart, and I usually shoot exclusively with Canon. Naturally, when I heard the news that they were introducing a new full frame camera - the EOS-1D X, I was intrigued. This was branded to be a their "flagship camera", it was destined to command the ever expanding fleet of Canon SLRs. Would all 18MP of this 1D X be enough for me and other professionals to embrace it and let go of our good ol'gear that we had learned to love?

I decided to put it to the test and explore the pros and cons when comparing the Canon 1D X to the Canon 5D Mark III, and its predecessor the Canon 1D Mark IV...

Canon 1DX Thoughts on a rainy day

Before I get into the 1DX, there are a few things I need to point out. First, there will be no comparisons with any other manufacturers cameras because it’s a pointless and boring exercise. Professionals may change systems if they perceive a commercial advantage but few amateurs ever do. Comparing models and saying "mine is better than yours” is something for the playground that we should have all grown out of. It should not matter what camera I use, it’s about the photography that I produce and the techniques that I teach. Never again will I say anything negative about another manufacturer’s camera system, it’s not how a professional behaves and it doesn’t help anyone. The manufacturers don’t do it and we, as photographers, should not do it. Not one bit. Ok, now that’s off my chest I feel a lot better, let’s get on with it!

Of course currently I am a Nikon photographer, you all know that, so this was a very interesting test for me to do. I gave the 1DX a much harder test than I did the D4 too, I just felt like I had to do it! First test, could it stand the full weight of the honed and perfectly chiselled (ho ho ho) Rouse body....

"At Photo Plus Expo in New York last week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Canon Advisor of Technical Information Chuck Westfall and a reporter from Rangefinder Magazine to discuss the Canon EOS-1D X.

I’ve suffered through the pains of the 1D Mark III, but I’ve enjoyed my 1D Mark IV despite its few warts. I’ve also had this strong desire to take a 1D Mark IV, 1Ds Mark III, 5D Mark II, and 7D and mix them all up to create the perfect camera. From what I’ve seen so far, it seems that is what Canon appears to have done and I couldn’t be happier. Everything I love about all of those cameras is present in the X (and much more), yet all of the frustrations and limitations of them appears to have been addressed...."

Sigma OS Macros on 5DIII / 1Dx Issue

Lightroom 4.1 Now Available

"Lightroom 4.1 is now available as a final release on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Lightroom 4. The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom. In addition, Lightroom 4.1 introduces the following new features:

The ability to process HDR TIFF files. (16, 24 or 32-bit TIFF files) This can be useful if you have merged multiple exposures into a single 32-bit image using Photoshop’s HDR Pro. Using the new basic panel controls can be a very effective and straightforward method of achieving an overall balance across the tonal range.
Additional Color Fringing corrections to help address chromatic aberration. Click here to learn more
Save photobooks created in the Book Module as JPEG files
Publishing photos to Adobe Revel is now accessible via a Publish plugin

Bugs Corrected in Lightroom 4.1

The following bugs that were part the Lightroom 4 releases have been corrected. The team appreciates the very detailed feedback the community has provided on Lightroom 4 and we’re excited to correct a number of issues experienced by our customers. These issues have been FIXED:

Point Curve adjustments made in Lightroom 3 have been restored.
Edit-in functionality has been restored to external applications including Adobe Photoshop and Nik plugins
Addressed performance issues in Lightroom 4, particularly when loading GPS track logs, using a secondary monitor, and the controls within the Develop module.
Ability to update DNG previews and metadata for more than 100 photos has been restored.
This update allows for improved viewing of subfolders and stacks in folders with a large number of photos.
It was possible that a layout of a saved book could be lost after quitting Lightroom 4.
Adjustments made in the Develop module were not properly being reflected to photos that have been laid out in the Book Module
Postscript Type 1 Fonts do not appear in the Font menu within the Book module.
Clarity adds grey tinting to 100% white tones.

Known Issues in Lightroom 4.1:

Double byte fonts such as those found in Chinese and Japanese characters are not being exported to PDF or when published to Blurb.
The Revel Publish Service will delete photos from a carousel. This occurs when the customer asks Lightroom to delete the carousel and then cancels out of the confirmation dialogue box.
