Zeiss ZE Distagon T* 25mm f/2 (Canon EF) - Review / Lab Test

Zeiss ZE Distagon T* 25mm f/2 (Canon EF) - Review / Lab Test | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Several of the currently offered manual focus Zeiss Z-series lenses are based on fairly old designs. However, slowly but steadily we are seeing newly developed lenses like the Distagon T* 35mm f/1.4 and the Distagon T* 25mm f/2. This time we'll have a look at the latter one. The T* 25mm f/2 is available in Nikon F and Canon EF mount. Apart from the lack of AF it is a fully coupled lens so a camera-controlled aperture, focus confirmation and EXIF data is supported. The Distagon is, obvious, a moderate ultra-wide angle lens with typical applications such as landscape, street and architecture photography. It is, of course, not exactly a budget item but it isn't any more expensive than its nearest competitor - the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L ... which has the advantage of being faster though. The optical design is not identical to the Zeiss ZA 24mm f/2 SSM (for Sony Alpha), BTW."

iPhone 4S vs Canon 5D Mark II: A Side-by-Side Comparison of 1080p HD Video

iPhone 4S vs Canon 5D Mark II: A Side-by-Side Comparison of 1080p HD Video | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Here’s a test comparing the 1080p HD video recording capabilities of the iPhone 4S and the Canon 5D Mark II. Vimeo user Robino Films shot the same scenes at the same time with both cameras using a special rig, and then synched the footage together. They also tried to match the exposure, shutter speed, frame rate, and picture style as much as possible."

Canon 5D Mark II Used to Convert 8mm Footage to Digital

Cinematographer James Miller spent two years developing a technique for converting 8mm footage to digital by beaming it directly onto the sensor of a Canon 5D Mark II. He replaced the bulb on an old projector with LED lights, and used elements from a disassembled lens to focus the light.

DxOMark - Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM II Canon: Test results

DxOMark - Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG HSM II Canon: Test results | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"This new Sigma 12-24mm EX DG HSM II wide-angle zoom for full-frame cameras is a somewhat improved version of the previous lens, the solidly-built Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG Canon.
Let’s start off by taking a look at how these two lenses compare when mounted on a Canon 5D Mark II body:

The most striking improvement for the EX DG HSM II is with respect to chromatic aberration, thanks to the use of FLD (“F” low dispersion) glass, specially formulated to simulate the transmission properties of fluorite glass (i.e., lower refractive index and dispersion as compared to other optical glass). There is marked suppression of chromatic aberration at 12mm, particularly in the image center, and at 24mm, chromatic aberrations completely disappear.
Vignetting, transmission, and resolution for the HSM II also show improvement over the earlier EX DG lens, but nowhere near as dramatic:

  • For vignetting, there is a net improvement at the 12mm focal length (e.g., f/4.5-5.6), and an overall improvement at all focal lengths from f/8 onwards.
  • Transmission results remain low for both lenses, with a scarcely-worth-mentioning improvement of only 0.2 stop for the HSM II.
  • For resolution, the HSM II generally better in the center and worse on the edges (for example, at 17mm, f/5).

One surprise, however, is that the HSM II scores worse for distortion than its predecessor. For both lenses, distortion is visible at 12mm, but negligible at higher focal lengths.
Although the EX DG HSM II’s DxOMark overall score (11) beats the EX DG’s score (10), obviously the improvements are not so significant as to induce EX DG owners to run out and replace their old lens with the newer model. For photographers looking for a wide-angle zoom and trying to decide between the HSM II and the EX DG, it is not clear that the improvements to the newer model are worth the more than 50% markup in price over the previous version."

Technicolor released the Color compatible LUT file

Thanks again to my friend Robert Cato for pointing to me that Technicolor has added an Apple Color compatible LUT file for their S-Curve LUT.

It means you no longer have to use the LUT buddy plugin.

When the minimalistic approach yields big results - Canon 5Dtips.com

We talk a lot about gear on this blog: tripods, rigs, lens, follow focus, etc… We take for granted that you need all of these to create anything that looks remotely professional. After all, if you dont have a super stable and sharp image, your end product can’t be good.
Well, Greg Watermann proves us wrong. Look at his coverage of the band Scars on Broadway...
