A 36-megapixel Pure Monochrome Camera (Modified Nikon D800)

A 36-megapixel Pure Monochrome Camera (Modified Nikon D800) | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"I am working with a modified Nikon D800 which has been altered so that it is now a true monochrome camera: no RGB filter array (removed), and of course no anti-aliasing filter. 36 megapixels that “see” in monochrome."

Lightroom 4.1 Now Available

Lightroom 4.1 Now Available | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Lightroom 4.1 is now available as a final release on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Lightroom 4. The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom. In addition, Lightroom 4.1 introduces the following new features:

  • The ability to process HDR TIFF files. (16, 24 or 32-bit TIFF files) This can be useful if you have merged multiple exposures into a single 32-bit image using Photoshop’s HDR Pro. Using the new basic panel controls can be a very effective and straightforward method of achieving an overall balance across the tonal range.
  • Additional Color Fringing corrections to help address chromatic aberration. Click here to learn more
  • Save photobooks created in the Book Module as JPEG files
  • Publishing photos to Adobe Revel is now accessible via a Publish plugin

Bugs Corrected in Lightroom 4.1

The following bugs that were part the Lightroom 4 releases have been corrected. The team appreciates the very detailed feedback the community has provided on Lightroom 4 and we’re excited to correct a number of issues experienced by our customers. These issues have been FIXED:

  • Point Curve adjustments made in Lightroom 3 have been restored.
  • Edit-in functionality has been restored to external applications including Adobe Photoshop and Nik plugins
  • Addressed performance issues in Lightroom 4, particularly when loading GPS track logs, using a secondary monitor, and the controls within the Develop module.
  • Ability to update DNG previews and metadata for more than 100 photos has been restored.
  • This update allows for improved viewing of subfolders and stacks in folders with a large number of photos.
  • It was possible that a layout of a saved book could be lost after quitting Lightroom 4.
  • Adjustments made in the Develop module were not properly being reflected to photos that have been laid out in the Book Module
  • Postscript Type 1 Fonts do not appear in the Font menu within the Book module.
  • Clarity adds grey tinting to 100% white tones.

Known Issues in Lightroom 4.1:

  • Double byte fonts such as those found in Chinese and Japanese characters are not being exported to PDF or when published to Blurb.
  • The Revel Publish Service will delete photos from a carousel. This occurs when the customer asks Lightroom to delete the carousel and then cancels out of the confirmation dialogue box.

Canon 5D Mark III - Nikon D800 Review

Canon 5D Mark III - Nikon D800 Review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

You'll never really know the truth about a camera until you get your hands on it and take it out into the field…and once you start printing your images there's nowhere to hide. I had high expectations for the new Canon 5D Mark III. Don't get me wrong. My current 5D Mark II has been amazing. I love my lenses especially the tilt and shift ones, but I am always searching for bigger and better things. So, after almost four years when Canon finally announced the released a new full-frame SLR, I couldn't wait to see what this new body was capable of. That was until I found out about the new Nikon D800 hitting the market at around the same time. Sure Canon has made some great improvements, but it just didn't seem geared towards landscape shooters like me.

Nikon D800-D800E First Comparison - Is the "E" Sharper? Is Moire a Problem?

Nikon D800-D800E First Comparison - Is the "E" Sharper? Is Moire a Problem? | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

I picked up my Nikon D800 about 10 days ago, and have been shooting with it and working on an initial review ever since. Then, this morning, the phone rang at about 10:30 am. It was Henry's, my dealer in Toronto where I had ordered both a D800 and a D800E as soon as they were announced. (Yes, I purchase most of the gear that I test at retail, especially items that I expect to use long-term).

"Hi Michael. Your D800E just came in."

"Great, I'll be over within the hour".

And thus began my day. Fortunately my schedule was clear, as was the weather, with crisp temperatures and clear skies. I grabbed my Nikon gear bag and headed out to both pick up the 800E and to do some long-awaited comparisons between the two cameras...

Notes on the Nikon D800

Notes on the Nikon D800 | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"I went to Nikon yesterday with my photojournalist friend Keith Bedford to get hands on a pre-production D800 and in particular look at it’s video functionality. As with my previous look at the D4 I was unable to take away any recorded imagery but we were able to test the camera with a range of accessories to see how the camera would work when set up for video. Here are a few of my notes and observations."

The Online Photographer: Myths About Megapixels (...And, Does the D800 Have Too Many?)

"The recent announcement of the 36-megapixel Nikon D800 has brought forth a certain number of predictable reactions, a few lauding it as the Second Coming and many more dismissing the utility of more megapixels.

Most such opinions are based on mythical (or at least mistaken) beliefs about what pixel counts really mean. Let's see how many of them I can shoot down in one column.

I've written on this subject many times before, so I'm not going to present detailed arguments. I am simply going to assert facts. To keep the number of comments I have to answer to a minimum, please remember to check to see if your doubts have already been addressed in the cited columns and my comments before you take issue with my myth-busting."

Nikon D800 delayed till October 2011, D4 in early 2012?

According to Quesabesde the Nikon D700 replacement is postponed till October 2011 and the Nikon D4 is expected to be announced in early 2012. This delay was caused by the earthquake in Japan.
In the past few weeks I have been receiving conflicting reports on a potential delay for the D800 and I am not convinced that this is the case. I still believe there will be a major Nikon announcement in late August. The Nikon mirrorless solution is probably delayed based on previous statements from Nikon representatives indicating a potential March/April announcement.

Digital Photography Review updates Nikon D800 review with D800E side-by-side testing

Digital Photography Review updates Nikon D800 review with D800E side-by-side testing | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"We've just added in-depth analysis of the Nikon D800E to our D800 review. We've spent some time testing the D800E alongside the conventional D800, shooting real-world samples and high-precision studio test shots. We've added four extra pages of content and analysis to the D800/D800E review showing exactly what the differences are between the cameras, both for stills and video work. We've added a 32-image D800E sample gallery and subjected the D800E to our scoring process. We've also used the time with the two cameras to look at the benefits of shooting uncompressed HD video footage."

Ron Martinsen's Photography Blog: FAIL: Nikon D800 Live View vs Canon 5D Mark III

Ron Martinsen's Photography Blog: FAIL: Nikon D800 Live View vs Canon 5D Mark III | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Cityscape shots are a little tricky because it’s tough to get a good overall image focus. In the shot above, I used my Canon 5D Mark III to dial in focus to get the best focus possible before taking the shot. After focusing, the only variable I couldn’t control was the wind, but for a 30 second exposure the result was okay – not great, but okay. (NOTE: The shot you see above is cropped and edited – click the image to see the out of camera original)

Once I have my settings dialed in, I switch to manual focus and use Live View at its maximum zoom to adjust my focus on items in the foreground and background to get the best balance of focus across the entire image. This is the greatest reason to use Live View in my opinion, so it’s automatic anytime I’m doing any shot that will allow me to use it (typically landscape or other static subject work).

For this to work my camera must be on a tripod and my subject must be static. The scene above of Seattle is a great test, so I took a few shots. While I’m not super happy with any of the shots I took due to wind, one of the huge problems I had during this test when comparing the Canon 5D Mark III against the Nikon D800 was the performance of the Live View on the D800.

Simply put, I found the Live View feature on the D800 to be unusable at maximum zoom under low light conditions like these. When I would zoom in with the Canon I’d get great detail and could easily dial in my focus on a detail like the people in top of the Space Needle. However, when I zoomed in with the Nikon all I could see was noise like you’d see on a old analog color TV. It was horrible and unusable..."

Nikon D800 Review

Nikon D800 Review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"We've just posted our Nikon D800 review. At 36MP, the D800 is the highest resolution camera you can buy without making the step up to medium format, it's also one of the first DSLRs to offer uncompressed video output. Despite these drastic increases in capability over the D700, Nikon's latest full-frame offering will be immediately familiar to any one who's shot with one of the company's high-end cameras. So what's the D800 like to shoot with and does all that resolution render its competition redundant?

We've recently received a reviewable D800E - the more expensive variant with a self-cancelling low-pass filter, to allow the capture of even higher resolution. We've covered the camera in the review but will be extending the coverage when we've had a chance to fully test it."

Nikon D800: The best sensor analyzed on DxOMark!

Nikon D800: The best sensor analyzed on DxOMark! | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"The two Nikon full-frame cameras, the D800 and the D4, occupy the top two places in the full-frame category. Simple and efficient. Still, be careful: as ever, in this review we are discussing only the D800’s RAW-image-based sensor results. We will follow up with DxOMark results for compatible lenses for this camera whose small pixel size promises to be very challenging.
Returning to the sensor, the D800’s Overall score is the best that has ever been achieved, and its use case scores are equally impressive..."

"In 1978, my parents brought me to Manhattan to buy a camera. Having utterly no idea whatsoever, I convinced my dad to spring for a Nikon FE. Why?, because even though I was clueless back then, I knew the name Nikon was synonymous with excellence in the photography world. For the past 34 years- 30 now as a professional- I've felt as though I've had Nikon hands, and Nikkor eyes. My relationship with the Nikon Corporation has been an enormous honor.
