Some Mirrorless 5X Macro Fun. (Too much fun, actually).

Some Mirrorless 5X Macro Fun. (Too much fun, actually). | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"I generally don’t write separate reviews on items. I put a ‘take’ up on most items we rent, letting people know what I think about it. That lets me be neutral because it doesn’t make me any difference what people rent as long as they’re happy with it: the return on a $10,000 lens and a $200 lens is the same to us. So if I think a product isn’t good I’ll suggest something else.
Every once in a while, though, I’ll evaluate a piece of equipment as a possible rental item and really be impressed with it. Impressed enough to write something about it even though we don’t even stock it for rent (yet). That happened today. We received a Nanoha Ultra Macro lens for mirrorless cameras that I’d ordered to evaluate as a possible rental item. Let me start by saying my expectations were low. The lens is made from a microscope objective so it has a maximum f/11 aperture. It has some LED lights on the front which I usually think of as something cheap and ineffective. If you Google Nanoha you get 42 pages about a female Anime character. But they had some nice images on their site, and I thought it might, might be worth a look."

Three Super Macro Rigs You Can Build At Home

Three Super Macro Rigs You Can Build At Home | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"After posting the big Macro tutorial, I thought it would be interesting to see what extreme macroists (yea, it's a new word) use to get those super detailed shots.

I was surprised by the amount of ingenuity compared to the amount of High end gear (hint more of the first, less of the second). This just goes to show that even with what you may consider highly specialized areas like macro, you can still make some pretty darn good pictures if you accept the lack of money as a creative constraint rather than a wall of bricks."

Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX Micro 40 mm f/2.8G Review

Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX Micro 40 mm f/2.8G Review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"In July 2011 the Nikon company quite unexpectedly presented a new lens - the Nikkor AF-S DX Micro 40 mm f/2.8G. It is a macro instrument, with the 1:1 reproduction ratio, designed to cooperate with reflex cameras featuring DX sensor format. It gives the same angle of view as a 60 mm device on full frame (so 39 degrees). It is a bit too much for a typical standard lens but, after all, standard lenses are not only equivalents of classic 50 mm instruments but also lenses with a bit longer focal lengths. Those who ever took photos using analogue Zenit cameras might recall the immortal Helios 2/58 lenses. Even today on the market you can find standard lenses with the focal length longer than 50 mm - you can mention here, e.g. the Voigtlander Nokton 58 mm f/1.4 SL II.
To sum up, the new Nikon lens can have at a push even three uses. First of all it is a macro device but it can be also considered a standard lens or be used as a telephoto for less stiff portraits."

I have covered Flickr member Fotoopa and his custom made Nikon rig for capturing insects in flight in the past. He now has an improved monster machine. The main camera is a Nikon D300 + 105mm f/2.8D lens but there is an external shutter Uniblitz VS14 between the camera and the lens that reduces the shutter lag from 52 msec to 3.3 msec.

"If taking high end macro shots of insects strikes you as hard, how about upping the level by taking the pictures while insects are in buzzing around mid-flight. Too easy you say. Let do this 3D.
