Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH POWER OIS - Review / Test Report

Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH POWER OIS - Review / Test Report | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
Micro-Four-Thirds (MFT) is undoubtedly the mirrorless system with the biggest footprint in the market today. However, so far the system focused primarily on consumer- and prosumer-grade products and ignored the professional arena but during the recent months we are seeing indications that this is going to change. Olympus released the popular OM-D camera and a high grade 75mm f/1.8 lens and Panasonic is also placing some bets into the higher end of the market.
In this review we'll have a look at the Panasonic Lumix X 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH Power OIS - the first fast standard zoom lens of the MFT system. In full format terms the field-of-view is equivalent to 24-70mm. While it is, of course, a f/2.8 lens regarding its speed potential, the depth-of-field capabilities are actually not quite as impressive. In MFT land you are "losing" about 2 f-stops here which obviously reduces the creative potential of the lens quite a bit.

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-LX7 with F1.4-2.3, 24-90mm equiv. lens: Digital Photography Review

Panasonic announces Lumix DMC-LX7 with F1.4-2.3, 24-90mm equiv. lens: Digital Photography Review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

Panasonic has announced the Lumix DMC-LX7 - the long-awaited update of its pocketable enthusiast compact camera. The LX7 features a slightly smaller sensor than the LX5, allowing it to offer the brightest lens of any compact camera with a really impressive F1.4-2.3 24-90mm equivalent range. The LX7 is based around a 10.1MP MOS sensor, rather than its predecessor's CCD, allowing it to offer 10 fps continuous shooting and 1080p60 movies (50p for European examples) in AVCHD Progressive format, or half that rate in MP4. It also gains an aperture ring around the lens, a 920k dot LCD, and finds room for stereo mics and a larger accessory port, allowing use with an optional high-res electronic viewfinder.

"The Panasonic-G X VARIO PZ 14–42 mm f/3.5–5.6 ASPH. P.O.I.S. is a new „kit” lens produced by Panasonic and a quite specific construction at the same time. We were very curious how such a construction performs in practice and we have decided to test this lens. Today we would like to present our review. Enjoy!"

"Our in-depth review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1. As the long-awaited spiritual successor to the highly-regarded Lumix GF1, this enthusiast-oriented offering from Panasonic combines its 16MP sensor and latest touchscreen interface with a rangefinder-inspired design. The wealth of external dials and buttons speaks to the photographer who prefers to take control over camera operation and exposure settings. Is this the camera GF1 owners have been waiting for? Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm f/4-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. - Review / Test Report

Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm f/4-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. - Review / Test Report | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"If we take a closer look at the super telephoto zoom options for the micro-four-thirds format we will find two lenses within the 35mm camera equivalent focal length of up to "600mm" - there is one Olympus lens covering 75-300mm (thus "150-600mm") as well as our test candidate, the Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 100-300mm f/4-5.6 MEGA O.I.S. Important characteristics of the Panasonic lens include an ED elements which is supposed to reduce optical aberrations, plus an optical image stabilizer ("OIS").
The the lens is available for around 500EUR which sounds expensive compared to conventional 300mm zoom lenses but the higher pixel density of four-thirds sensors require a correspondingly higher quality - on paper at least."

Panasonic Leica DG SUMMILUX 25 mm f/1.4 ASPH. review

Panasonic Leica DG SUMMILUX 25 mm f/1.4 ASPH. review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

When you start a system kind of from scratch you must make sure its potential users have several basic lenses available. We think here not only about an all-purpose kit lens but also about a fast, classic standard so the equivalent of 50 mm device. The moment the Olympus company decided to launch its 4/3 system they must have been aware that they would have to launch a lot of new lenses as well. Fortunately they didn’t have to produce everything on their own because the 4/3 system is supported also by Panasonic, in cooperation with Leica, and by independent producers such as Sigma. Due to that help the new system got a fast standard lens, offered by Leica. We think here of course about the Leica-D Summilux 25 mm f/1.4 lens, which has already been tested by us. It wasn’t exactly cheap (like practically any instrument boasting the Leica logo), but it offered really excellent optical properties. Hardly any f/1.4 lens is fully useful up from the maximum relative aperture and the Leica didn’t have the slightest problems with it.
When Olympus and Panasonic focused their efforts on constructing the Micro 4/3 system, the situation developed in a similar way. A fast 1.4/25 standard was planned as a result of Leica and Panasonic cooperation and, owing to that, in June 2011 a launch of a new lens was officially announced – the Panasonic-Leica DG SUMMILUX 25 mm f/1.4 ASPH.

Panasonic DMC GF3 Review

Panasonic DMC GF3 Review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

Just published: Our in-depth review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3. With the touchscreen-equipped GF3, Panasonic goes further to embrace compact camera upgraders, but makes yet another break from the chunky, enthusiast-friendly ergonomics of the GF1. The smallest Micro Four Thirds camera yet introduces some new features, including all-area AF system and slightly improved JPEG image quality at high ISO settings. We have also taken the opportunity in this review to publish studio comparison shots from the Sony NEX-C3 and Olympus PEN E-PL3, both of which will be reviewed in the coming weeks.

Lens Review: Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6G

Lens Review: Panasonic 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6G | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
The Panasonic 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 ASPH MEGA O.I.S. Lumix G Vario is an update to the original G1-system kit lens, slightly smaller and lighter, and with a 3mm reduction in its longest focal length. Actually introduced with the G2, we didn't have an opportunity to test it when we reviewed that camera, but received a copy of this lens with the new G3 body. The new design removes the exterior switch to control image stabilization, making it controlled completely from the body; as well, it employs the newer continuously variable aperture, used to great effect in movie mode.

The 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 was designed exclusively for the micro four-thirds sensor size; it's not clear whether the lens could be mounted on other Panasonic models with an adapter, or even if you would want to. The lens offers focal lengths equivalent to 28-84mm, in 35mm film terms.

Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 ASPH - Review / Lens Test Report | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
The Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 ASPH is - besides the the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 ASPH and the Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/2.8 Pancake - the third pancake lens available for micro-four-thirds system cameras. In terms of its depth-of-field capabilities it behaves like a f/5.0 on full format (35mm) while the focal length is equivalent to 28mm. With a few words - a small wide-angle lens suited for photojournalism. The lens is either sold as part of a camera kit with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 for about 600EUR or separately for about 350EUR.

Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S.

Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

The Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42mm is a member of Panasonic's new premium “X” series. It is probably the smallest zoom lens in the whole industry. However, this compactness is achieved by a trick - out of the box (in its "transport position") the lens is not ready for shooting - it needs to be extended to its working mode similar to a digicam lens. Nevertheless, in working mode it is still shorter than e.g. the directly competing Panasonic G 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6.
The compact allrounder offers an equivalent focal length of about 28-84mm in full format (35mm) terms. The lens is offered both as part of camera-lens kit and individually. In the latter case is available for around 350 Euro which is certainly a bit expensive for a lens in this class but its "pancake" style character just doesn't come for free.

Panasonic launches Lumix DMC-G5 16MP mid-level mirrorless camera

Panasonic launches Lumix DMC-G5 16MP mid-level mirrorless camera | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

Panasonic has formally unveiled the LUMIX DMC-G5, a mid-level mirrorless interchangable lens camera. The G5 is built around a 16MP LiveMOS sensor that the company implies hasn't been used in a G-series camera before. This, combined with the company's latest 'Venus Engine' allows the capture of 1080p video at 60 frames per second (50p in European examples). It also gains an additional control lever, higher-resolution 920,000 dot rear LCD and regains the eye-sensor to automatically switch between LCD and electronic viewfinder. In principle the G5 will sit above the existing G3 in the company's lineup. For more information, read our hands-on preview.

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"There was a time where fast lenses were scarce in Micro-Four-Thirds land but things have changed quite a bit during the last 2 years. Among the first high-speed lenses was the Panasonic Leica Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH which filled the "standard lens" gap in the system. Its maximum aperture of f/1.4 is certainly fast with respect to light gathering, but in terms of depth-of-field you are effectively "loosing" about two f-stops in this respect compared to the classic full format but this is still sufficient for quite shallow depth-of-field images especially for documentary photography. You should be able to find one for around 500EUR so it is far from being a budget item considering the typical prices for standard prime lenses in the DSLR market."

Panasonic Lumix G X Vario PZ 45-175mm f/4-5.6 ASPH OIS. - Review / Lens Test | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"If we take a closer look at the micro-four-thirds lens lineup we will find five telephoto zoom lenses - 2x Olympus and 3x Panasonic lenses including our test candidate. The Panasonic LUMIX G X VARIO PZ 45-175mm f/4-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. belongs to the new premium d “X” series. The Panasonic lens features an electric zoom lever and an optical image stabilizer ("OIS") as well as 2 ED lenses which are supposed to reduce optical aberrations.
You should be able to find one for around 400EUR which is not cheap in absolute terms but this is roughly in line with comparable offerings from other original manufacturers."

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 Micro Four Thirds camera review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 Micro Four Thirds camera review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"It's no surprise that the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera category is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. These compact, pro-featured ILCs undoubtedly have a strong future, with mass consumer appeal and a widening assortment of price points. We're particularly taken with the technology's compact footprint -- we're focusing our camera reviews on mirrorless models, and even outfitted our entire CES team with Sony's NEX-C3. But long before the likes of Sony and Fujifilm launched their first cameras, Olympus and Panasonic dominated the then-infant mirrorless category, developing the Micro Four Thirds sensor standard, that, for better or worse, has failed to catch on among other manufacturers. Surprisingly, Panasonic's pioneering days were far stronger than those of recent past, with the company's GF1 melting the hearts of compact-seeking professionals. But following that successful first model, Panasonic opted to take the GF series in a different direction, launching a dumbed-down GF2 (and later GF3) in what was likely an attempt to appeal to the much larger amateur category. This left the GF1 faithful without a worthy successor -- until now."

Panasonic DMC GX1 Preview

Panasonic DMC GX1 Preview | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GX1 is the company's latest addition to its G-series lineup. And although the camera bears the '1' appendage in its model name, it is clear from even a cursory glance that with the GX1, Panasonic has provided the long-awaited spiritual successor to the highly regarded Lumix DMC-GF1. Of perhaps even greater significance, the move to introduce a separate GX product line (as opposed to releasing the camera as a 'GF4') would seem to suggest a long-term commitment by the camera maker to meet the demands of enthusiasts who embraced the GF1.

Launched back in 2009, the GF1 was, ironically, Panasonic's attempt to court compact-camera owners looking to upgrade, with what was then billed as, 'the world's smallest, lightest interchangeable lens camera'. Instead, the GF1's high quality Raw output and classic rangefinder aesthetic gained a strong and passionate following in the enthusiast market. DSLR owners looking for a second 'go-anywhere' camera with high image quality embraced the camera's external control points and its relatively compact Micro Four Thirds lens offerings.

It is precisely these users who have been disappointed twice over with the Lumix DMC-GF2 and Lumix DMC-GF3 releases, which broke with the retro styling and button-driven operational control in favor of ever-smaller form factors and design cues that pointed unambiguously to users who may be turned off by an overly complex (and expensive) camera. With the GX1 Panasonic is taking square aim at more advanced users for whom the GF1 struck a pleasing balance between size and operability."

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4 ASPH H-X025 Review

Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4 ASPH H-X025 Review | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
The Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4 ASPH is a fast prime lens for cameras using the Micro Four Thirds standard. Mounted on a Micro Four Thirds body, the effective focal length becomes 50mm, giving the lens natural-looking 'standard' coverage.

The DG Summilux 25mm f1.4 was launched in June 2011 alongside the Panasonic Lumix GF3, although its size and pricing will see it more commonly fitted to larger bodies like the Lumix G3. The fast f1.4 focal ratio allows you to work in low light and achieve a very shallow depth-of-field, isolating subjects against a blurred background, while the standard coverage makes it an ideal general-purpose lens.
