Using A Double Flash Bracket To Add Modeling light To Your Setup

Using A Double Flash Bracket To Add Modeling light To Your Setup | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"One of the downsides of using a small strobe is that you don't get the nice modeling light like the big studio guns.

That means that you have to pre-visualize your light. If you are new to strobes this may not be trivial even on a bare strobe, but throw some modifiers in (e.g. a softbox or an umbrella) and it get even harder. This is why a modeling light is can be your best friend as you make your first steps into the modifiers world. In this tutorial I will explain how you can add a modeling light to a strobe using a DIY Double Flash Bracket, but any double flash bracket will do."

How To Win The "I Have No Studio" Challenge

How To Win The "I Have No Studio" Challenge | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Having dealt with all kinds of spaces to shoot in, I can say that having to deal with a small space to shoot portraits is one of my worst fears. (This is why I conquered the basement in our new house).

Seeing the huge studios of folks like Zack Arias or Scott Kelby can have a paralyzing effect and send you on a the road to Im-never-gonna-make-anything-good-with-my-space trip.

A few weeks ago I started talking with photographer Matthew Shalaby who is doing some amazing work with a very confined space. Actually Matthew has been shooting for a very short time and not only dealing with the lack of a "decent" studio (shoots in a 8 feet by 10 feet room) but also the lack of a crew. So most of his work is done in a TFx (Time For Prints/CD/Other) form.

Matthew makes some great use of the inverse square law and pulls the lighting modifiers very close to his models. Which maximizes the available space, but also makes some very soft light."

Use Blender 3D To Emulate Every Possible Lighting

Use Blender 3D To Emulate Every Possible Lighting | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"One of the ways to understand how light works in photographs is to do basic exercises. We did one way by creating the portrait lighting cheat sheet that shows how positioning a single light effect a portrait, others have done similar stuff with an egg.

Photographer Pat David had another idea. Using a CC-BY 3D scan by Infinite Realities and an open source 3D modeling software called Blender 3D (Blender is darn near real rendering engine, it can even mimic shaped bokeh), he started to play with positioning various light sourced around the scanned head."
