Fast standard zoom lenses are certainly a hot spot in the product portfolios. So far this arena has been dominated by the original manufacturers although the third-party manufacturers tried to challenge the big boys every once in a while. Tamron did so as well with the SP 28-75mm f/2.8 XR but the lens had/has no differentiator other than its low pricing. As such it was popular among amateurs on a budget but it has been largely ignored by professionals.However, their latest offering is a different beast altogether - the Tamron AF 24-70mm f/2.8 SP Di USD VC. Other than matching the specs of competing products it has something unique - it is the first fast standard zoom lens featuring an image stabilizer (VC = Vibration Control). An ultrasonic AF (USD) as well as weather sealing are also part of the package. Obviously Tamron is pretty much convinced of the capabilities of their new baby because they do no longer want to compete by price - they are asking about 1000EUR. Now this may still be significantly less than the price of the new Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8, but it is a magnitude more expensive than the old Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR and it's certainly no budget item anymore. In this review we'll have a look at how the lens performs on our current FX test camera, the Nikon D3x.

"This highly anticipated lens from Tamron covers the popular 24-70mm range with a fast constant aperture of f/2.8. It is one of Tamron's 'SP' lenses, which denotes that it should be able to produce professional quality results. Unlike lenses in this range from the main camera manufacturers, this optic has Vibration Compensation, which should help to tame camera shake at low shutter speeds. An ultrasonic focusing motor should provide quick focusing speeds, silently with full time manual focus override. This lens is available in Canon, Nikon and Sony mounts, with the Canon model becoming available first. The Sony compatible model will lack Vibration compensation, as this functionality is already built into Sony DSLR and SLT bodies. As this lens is a 'Di' optic, it is compatible with both full frame and crop sensor camera bodies."

"The Tamron 18-270 f/3.5-6.3 VC still offers the largest zoom range of any currently available DSLR lens (at the time of this review). Even though no competitor has matched the zoom ratio, yet, the lens nonetheless looked a bit dated compared to competing products because Tamron could not offer a sonic wave AF drive. With the new Piezo Drive (PZD) they can now build very compact sonic wave AF drives and implemented it first in the new 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 VC PZD.
The new PZD lens corrects another "issue" of the 18-270 VC: in the past, Tamron super-zooms have usually combined a very large zoom range with a very compact design. The 18-270 VC did not quite fit here, being surprisingly large for a Tamron zoom lens. The new 18-270 PZD is considerably smaller again and more in line with earlier offerings, like the 18-250 Di II or 18-200 Di II. No further details of their intentions have been given. The announcement comes just after Sigma announced its first lenses for both Sony's E-mount and Micro Four Thirds - both lenses that we think make more sense on APS-C than the Micro Four Thirds format. The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SP Di VC USD is the latest addition to the market segment of stabilized slow speed consumer grade tele-zoom lenses. It faces rather stiff competition from its direct competitor - the Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR - which has been immensely successful ever since it was introduced.
On paper the Tamron throws a new optical design with XLD glass ("Extra Low Dispersion"), VC ("Vibration Control", 4 f-stop effectivity) and the new USD ("Ultrasonic Silent Drive") into the fight. Price-wise it is on roughly the same level as the Nikon lens.

Tamron has announced that it's developing an image stabilised superzoom lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The 14-150mm F/3.5-5.8 Di III VC (Model C001) is poised to become the first third-party zoom for the system, and will offer a 28-300mm equivalent focal length range. It uses the company's Vibration Control (VC) system to counteract hand-shake, and a stepper motor for fast and silent autofocus. The lens will also feature a metal barrel and be available in a black or silver finish. Price and availibility are still to be confirmed.
When it comes to fast tele zooms, there is only a very limited selection of dedicated DX lenses. One of these rare species is the Tokina AT-X 50-135mm f/2.8... or to be precise, it was, since it is discontinued for a while already.
The AT-X 50-135mm is the result of a cooperation between Tokina and Pentax, which leads to the interesting situation that a Pentax design is also available to users of competing systems. However, the Pentax and Tokina lenses are not completely identical, at least mechanically. In this review we will have a look at how the lens performs on our current DX test camera, the Nikon D7000.

"Tamron has always been one of the driving forces behind extreme range zoom lenses. With the Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] VC macro (boy, what a name ...) they combined the largest zoom range available for DSLRs (still a valid claim at the time of this review, more than 3 years after the lens was announced) with their optical stabilization system, which was first seen in another super zoom lens, the full-frame AF 28-300mm VC.
The 18-270mm VC is a dedicated DX lens that covers a large range from wide angle to quite long tele settings. So, it's an all-purpose wonder, albeit a slow speed one with maximum aperture settings down to f/6.3 at the long end of the zoom range. "In a time before digital SLRs were invented, medium tele macro lenses in the range of 90 to 105 mm often had to cover two usage scenarios: macro shots, of course, but since most of these lenses were also rather fast in terms of aperture they also eliminated the need for a dedicated portrait lens for many.
In the digital era with APS-C sensors being used by the majority of DSLR owners, 60 mm lenses now cover the needs of macro shooters looking for medium tele options. But allthough the fast aperture of usually f/2.8 has remained, the reduced image size of crop sensors leads to increased depth of field over comparable full frame options, making these lenses less attractive for portrait shots or any other usage, where subject separation is one of the primary targets. Tamron is the first to address this issue by offering a 60mm macro lens that features a maximum aperture of f/2."
