What is Phenomenon-Based Learning?

Finland will go through a new education reform that will take over in the academic year 2016-2017. Phenomenon-Based Learning will be complementing Finland’s traditional subjects. The Phenomenon or Topic Based Learning is being planned to be conducted over periods during the year and could be paced in projects – is the old new in Finland’s education. For more than three decades, Finnish schools have had a form of Phenomenon-Based Learning. What will change in 2016-2017 is that it will be obligatory in all basic schools for seven to 16-year-olds.

Phenomenon-Based Learning tackles real-world scenarios holistically from different subject areas’ perspectives. This method will entail a rich learning experience, which is relevant to learners’ lives. The interdisciplinary learning could be conducted in a simple way, by linking similar knowledge areas between different subjects and introducing them at the same slot of the academic year.

This develops awareness of how curricula intersect to form the broader frame of knowledge. A more sophisticated interdisciplinary approach, such as Phenomenon-Based Learning occurs when we go beyond simply linking different subjects to applying, organising centers and essential questions to plan topic teaching. One example could be the questions students have about a topic such as the importance of the European Union. To answer these questions knowledge and skills from economics, history, geography and languages are to be integrated.

Interesting chart. I'm wondering why there is need of a 'versus' in this matter, and I think the construct of pedagogy lacks some dimensions. Pedagogy can also be very learner-centered.

Excelente e simples comparativo sobre diferenças de aprendizagem entre adultos e crianças. Sem dúvida, vale um inforgrafico aqui pra ilustrar !

Prof. Mark Levit's comment, July 21, 2013 10:11 AM
With my time now time divided between university classrooms and the commercial sector, this chart suggests both reason and hope. Higher education today promises job readiness but the customs, standards, and traditions of the education business make that an unlikely outcome. For example, the college students before whom I stand weekly are substantially more interested in, and learn from, my stories of client, employee, & vendor relations and conflict than what appears in their texts. Those stories get remembered and provide practical rather than traditionally academic reasons to learn. Most students learn critical thinking and other university-mandated disciplines when reasons for learning them become evident. But with life now operating on fast-forward in this era of the Internet, paradigm shifts, and the profit-challenged corporate sector, we no longer have the luxury of education's traditional and (perhaps) obsolete modalities. When we cater to students other than those who perceive college as permission to party for 4 (or more) years, eliminate the aggressive financial goals of the powerful dollar-starved multinational corporations to which we refer as "universities," when we acknowledge students must learn for the purpose of competing on a commercial world stage, we'll enjoy, nonce again, the goals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Simultaneously, we'll put our nation back on-track for renewed greatness.

When it comes to education, the Finnish know what they’re doing. The Scandinavian country has one of the top education systems in the world, and this year, ranked number one in literacy. So what’s Finland’s secret? It’s simple: more play, less work.

Contemplative Pedagogy ~ Center for Teaching | Vanderbilt University

Contemplative Pedagogy ~ Center for Teaching | Vanderbilt University | Strictly pedagogical | Scoop.it

Contemplative pedagogy involves teaching methods designed to cultivate deepened awareness, concentration, and insight.  Contemplation fosters additional ways of knowing that complement the rational methods of traditional liberal arts education.  As Tobin Hart states, “Inviting the contemplative simply includes the natural human capacity for knowing through silence, looking inward, pondering deeply, beholding, witnessing the contents of our consciousness….  These approaches cultivate an inner technology of knowing….”  This cultivation is the aim of contemplative pedagogy, teaching that includes methods “designed to quiet and shift the habitual chatter of the mind to cultivate a capacity for deepened awareness, concentration, and insight.”  Such methods include journals, music, art, poetry, dialogue, questions, and guided meditation.

"In the classroom, these forms of inquiry are not employed as religious practices but as pedagogical techniques for learning through refined attention or mindfulness.  Research confirms that these contemplative forms of inquiry can offset the constant distractions of our multi-tasking, multi-media culture.  Thus, creative teaching methods that integrate the ancient practice of contemplation innovatively meet the particular needs of today’s students.

"The following video, produced here at the CFT, features interviews with faculty members of Vanderbilt’s contemplative pedagogy group describing the roles these forms of inquiry play in their teaching."

Bronwyn Desjardins's curator insight, May 11, 2013 6:14 AM

Dr. Harry Wong mentioned that Finland's educational model involves trusting their teachers. Think about it. When schools overmanage their teachers are they not taking their staff's focus away from teaching through the implementation of checklists and rigid process controls?

If the children in the classroom are learning then the teacher must be teaching, but this opens up a whole other can of worms: How do you measure the learning? What is learning - how does one define and measure it in a 21st century digital world?

Have a look at the Finnish method.

"We need to teach knowledge or content in context with the tasks and activities the students are undertaking. Our students respond well to real world problems. Our delivery of knowledge should scaffold the learning process and provide a foundation for activities. As we know from the learning pyramid content delivered without context or other activity has a low retention rate."
